Midjourney, an AI art generator from text, has arrived and is open for business. As of this writing, it has nearly 14 million members. (as April 2023)

The current application method involves entering prompts (keywords) and adjusting advanced settings such as image quality and ratio to specify the desired appearance of the image. During the mid-journey, the platform generates four different images as initial results. From there, users can create variations based on the selected image or save it as a high-resolution version.

I created a customer journey map to reveal the cumbersome experience, where users frequently navigate back and forth between two separate softwares particularly during the image management stage.

Research Current Product User Feedback

I conducted extensive research on platforms such as Reddit, Trustpilot, G2, as well as personal curated prompts sharing websites. This thorough exploration enabled me to collect valuable insights from users and their experiences with the product.

These are the painpoints that I have found:

The current UI poses accessibility limitations and lacks user-friendliness, particularly for first-time users, resulting in a challenging navigation and engagement experience.

The search bar presents challenges in usability, making it difficult for users to effectively utilize it. Moreover, there is a lack of clarity regarding which keywords are banned, resulting in confusion during the type-ahead process.

Lengthy Loading Time

• Loading screen: Prolonged loading times impact user experience, causing delays and hindering interaction with the platform
• Allow navigating away (using alert or download center):Users cannot navigate away from the loading screen. Adding an alert or download center would allow them to interact with other features during the loading process.

Absence of Prompts and Visual References. The platform lacks prompts and visual references, leading to a diminished user experience.

• No prompts library: Users lack access to a comprehensive prompt library, which hampers their creative inspiration and makes it challenging to generate desired content.
• Inability to share prompts: The platform does not offer the functionality to share prompts with others, preventing users from collaborating and exchanging ideas effectively.
• Absence of prompts collections: Users cannot organize or access curated prompt collections, which significantly hinders their ability to explore diverse content and engage in meaningful creative processes.

User Concerns and Feature Improvements

• User report on feature appropriateness: Users have expressed concerns about the suitability of the current feature, emphasizing the need for evaluation and potential enhancements to ensure a more satisfactory user experience.
• Showcasing images for user-generated content: Enabling users to use showcase images as a foundation for generating unique content enhances their ability to draw inspiration and create personalized images more effectively.
• Lack of guidance for advanced settings: Users struggle with unclear platform instructions for finding and adjusting advanced settings. Clear instructions and intuitive cues would enhance navigation and utilization of advanced settings, improving the image generation experience.

The new design aims to eliminate the need for users to use two separate software platforms by combining all the essential features into a single website. The primary focus of this improvement lies in the image generation stage. To enhance the user experience, visual references will be provided, offering users a clear understanding of the desired output.
